News Release The Wisconsin Council of the Blind and visually Impaired Announces 2008 Philanthropy Day Awards. Madison, May 7, 2008. The Wisconsin Council of the Blind and Visually Impaired will present awards to four outstanding Northern Wisconsin organizations and citizens for their public service and philanthropic contributions at a special luncheon in Fifield on Friday May 16, 2008. Awards and Recognitions will be presented to: Bay Area Rural Transit.(BART), Outstanding Community Transportation Service Award. Mr. Tom Waby, Transit Director and Mr. Brandon Boys, Board President, Ashland, Wisconsin. Northern Area Agency on Aging, Inc., Rhinelander. Outstanding Community Service Organization Award; Mr. Richard Sicchio, Executive Director State Representative Steve Wieckert (R-Appleton). Outstanding Public Service Award. Rep. Wieckert serves the Appleton area and has been instrumental in updating services for blind and visually impaired constituents which have a statewide impact. Mr. Arnold Tucker. Lifetime Achievement Award. Mr. Tucker is from Park Falls and has been a leader in many extraordinary activities causes. We celebrate his valuable continuing contributions. Also joining the Council for the day will be State Representative Mary Williams of Phillips Wisconsin. She will assist in the Award presentations to Mr. Tucker and Rep. Wieckert. “Our Northern Wisconsin Philanthropy Day pays tribute to the many contributions these wonderful organizations and individuals have made to our lives and our great state”, stated Karen V. Majkrzak, Executive Director of the WCB&VI. The Council, by presenting its 6 th Annual Philanthropy Day, is acknowledging the wide spectrum of services provided by the recipients and the profound impact that “giving” has on the fabric of society. “Our celebration is intended to strengthen philanthropy and improve volunteerism by emphasizing their importance and traditions”, stated Chris Zenchenko, President of the Council. The Awards Luncheon will begin at 11:45 a.m. on Friday May 16, 2008. It will be held at the Northwoods Supper Club, Fifield Wisconsin. From 8:30 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. the same morning, the Council will also be offering a seminar titled Aging and Vision Loss: Finding Powerful Tools for Independence. The event is open to the public. Ms. Sherry Ashby, RN and Arnold Tucker R.Ph, both Certified Diabetes Instructors, will present Fighting Back: Winning the Battle Against Diabetes. Ms. Ashby is employed by the Howard Young Medical Center. Mr. Tucker is a member of the Wisconsin Council of the Blind and Visually Impaired. Also Mr. Tim Panula of the Office of the Blind and Visually Impaired will present an update on the services and programs offered by the State of Wisconsin, Vendors representing several companies who specialize in adaptive equipment and assistive technology will be on hand all day. There is a $10.00 per person registration fee for the seminar and luncheon.
