Read the interview done with Janis on Portal Wisconsin Madison, WI: Grant recipient promotes accessibility with her work. Bold Visions , a portfolio of floral images by Janis Nussbaum Senungetuk, will be presented in a premier exhibition at the Wisconsin Council of the Blind and Visually Impaired in Madison, Wisconsin, during the Council’s Community Open House on Friday, December 7, 2007. The exhibit , which runs through February 28, 2008, is free and open for viewing from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday at the Council offices at 754 Williamson Street. Continuing in her chosen role as a portrait artist, Janis Nussbaum Senungetuk has created portraits of flowers that both depict their physical resemblance and evoke the emotions of spring and summer. The dramatic interplay of sunlight filtered through the translucent petals and leaves of the plants illuminates their innate beauty. Nussbaum Senungetuk describes herself as an image-maker who uses photography as a tool to capture a moment in time. Images are photographed using natural light. After digitally altering the images to heighten both contrast and color intensity they are printed on cotton rag printmaking paper that further distances them from their photographic origin. The artist earned Master of Fine Arts and Master of Arts degrees in printmaking and drawing from Northern Illinois University-DeKalb. She was awarded her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting with honors from the San Francisco Art Institute. Receiving the 2007-2008 Signature Grant for new work from the Madison Arts Commission and using the offices of the Wisconsin Council of the Blind and Visually Impaired as an exhibition venue has provided Nussbaum Senungetuk an avenue through which to continue her exploration of image defined by contrast and color. The focus of Bold Visions is the production and presentation of visual art that is accessible for viewers with visual impairment. Nussbaum Senungetuk herself has impaired vision from diabetic retinopathy. Image title cards and a descriptive commentary of the exhibit are available in large type and braille. Bold Visions is funded in part by a grant from the Madison Arts Commission, with additional funds from the Wisconsin Arts Board. For additional exhibit information or to arrange a tour, please call the Wisconsin Council of the Blind and Visually Impaired at 608-255-1166. All are welcome.
