The Wisconsin Council of Blind and Visually Impaired is pleased to announce its 2009 Legislative Day. The event will be held on the first floor rotunda of the Wisconsin State Capitol beginning at 10:00 a.m. and ending at 2:00 p.m. Our Legislative Day will feature visitor-friendly exhibits sponsored by a wide variety of state organizations that serve blind and visually impaired individuals.

At 11:00 a.m., in front of the Robert La Follette statue, the Council will hold a press conference with State Representative Donna Seidel to discuss the Accessible Instructional Materials Act. The Randolph Sheppard Vendors Association of Wisconsin will be on hand for those who wish to purchase lunch. The lunches will include a sandwich, soda, and dessert for $6. There will be awards ceremony at noon to honor State Superintendent of Public Instruction Elizabeth Burmaster for her contributions to the education of blind and visually impaired students. In addition, State Representative Roger Roth will give a few brief comments on the Freedom to Marry Bill.

Throughout the day, participants will be meeting with their respective legislators to discuss issues of importance to the visually impaired. Photographers will be available to take photos of participants as legislators visit the exhibits. Volunteers from UW-Madison’s Delta Gamma Sorority will provide assistance to visitors and participants.

This is an excellent opportunity to learn about issues related to blind and visually impaired individuals and organizations serving blind and visually impaired people, to work toward solutions for quality living and equal treatment, and for constituents to speak with their state legislators. Everyone’s participation is welcome.
