New resource for sleep disorder
Lack of light perception can interfere with a blind person’s ability to sleep well and soundly.
The inability to perceive light causes a severe disruption of the 24-hour sleep-wake pattern, causing cyclical bouts of nighttime sleeplessness and excessive daytime fatigue and napping.
Non-24-Hour Sleep-Wake Disorder, also known as “Non-24,” is a chronic sleep disorder that affects approximately 50% of people who are totally blind. Overall, about 65,000 people in the United States are estimated to suffer from this condition.
A new five-part article series on Non-24 is available in the Matilda Ziegler Magazine For the Blind and online here.
Medical journalist Lynne Lamberg, co-author of The Body Clock Guide, is the author of the series. The segments outline what Non-24 is and include various interviews of blind individuals who live with it. The series also addresses current treatments and ongoing research for remedies of this disorder.
Topics of the series:
Part 1: It’s not just insomnia
Part 2: How the body clock works
Part 3: The search for ways to reset inner clocks
Part 4: Developing new tactics for treatment
Part 5: Studies of melatonin-like medications underway
