The following list of links are a collection of  state government services designed to assist the blind and visually impaired. The Wisconsin Council of the Blind and Visually impaired has worked with many of these agencies in the past but is unable to make additional recommendations or endorsements other than listing their contact information here.

Government Services
Department of Transportation (DOT), Special Plates Unit The Division of Motor Vehicles issues an identification card to adults who do not have a driver’s license. A person with a visual impairment may also qualify for disabled license plates or a handicapped parking card. Department of Workforce Development (DWD) / Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) Services from the DVR assist individuals in obtaining employment. Trained vocational counselors may provide services to the client in the home, but the client typically meets their counselor at the office. In addition to counseling and guidance, the rehabilitation counselor may assist with setting up training opportunities for the client. Assistance with job placement will be provided. Governor’s Committee for People With Disabilities The Governor’s Committee for People With Disabilities advises the Governor, the Legislature, and State agencies on the needs and concerns of people with disabilities, identifies progress in eliminating barriers for the disabled, tracks state legislation relating to disabled people, and annually reports to the Governor on problems and recommended solutions. Social Security Administration – If You Are Blind Or Have Low Vision-How We Can Help If You Are Blind Or Have Low Vision-How We Can Help – This publication is a large-print booklet that explains the various Social Security provisions that apply to people who are blind. The booklet emphasizes work incentives in the programs and includes examples of how people who are blind can use them to supplement their income and return to work. It also lists the various special services available to people with visual impairments, including the publications that are available in Braille and recorded format. Wisconsin Office for the Blind & Visually Impaired The Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services, Office for the Blind and Visually Impaired, is the government agency designated to provide assessment, training and information to adults with vision loss, their families and interested professionals.
