The Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services, Office for the Blind and Visually Impaired, is the government agency designated to provide assessment, training and information to adults with vision loss, their families and interested professionals. These services exist to enhance independent living skills and quality of life for persons with vision loss.

The Committee advises the Governor, the Legislature, and State agencies on the needs and concerns of people with disabilities, identifies progress in eliminating barriers for the disabled, tracks state legislation relating to disabled people, and annually reports to the Governor on problems and recommended solutions.

Services from the DVR assist individuals in obtaining employment. Trained vocational counselors may provide services to the client in the home, but the client typically meets their counselor at the office. In addition to counseling and guidance, the rehabilitation counselor may assist with setting up training opportunities for the client. Assistance with job placement will be provided.

The Division of Motor Vehicles issues an identification card to adults who do not have a driver’s license. A person with a visual impairment may also qualify for disabled license plates or a handicapped parking card. Form MV 2162, for a license plate, or form MV-2548, for a parking card, must be completed by a physician
