Wisconsin Association of Blind Athletes (WABA)

The Wisconsin Association of Blind Athletes is a state chapter of the United States Association of Blind Athletes. The state association sponsors three sports education camps on yearly basis. The camps include a 5-8 Year Old/Parent(s) Sports Education Camp, Junior Sports Education Camp (youths ages 9-12), and Senior Sports Education Camp (youths ages 13-18). The camp serves youths with varying degrees of vision loss and individual needs, and focuses on exposure to physical education, recreation, and competitive sports. Sports practiced at the camp include bowling, cycling (coming soon), goal ball, gymnastics, judo, power lifting, swimming, track and field, weight training/cardiovascular conditioning and wrestling. In addition, individual attention is available for to athletes who require some assistance with the pre-sport movements. If you have any questions, please contact Dan Wenzel. Newsline for the Blind

The National Federation of the Blind offers 24-hour toll-free newspaper-reading service accessible from any touch-tone telephone. Three national papers (The Chicago Tribune, New York Times and Washington Post), and three Wisconsin papers (the State Journal, Capital Times and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel), are available. Users must fill out an application and return it to the National Federation of the Blind. It takes approximately two weeks for the NFB to process the application. BOLD, Inc., a non-profit, tax-exempt, publicly supported corporation, has as its purpose the creation of a national program to rehabilitate the blind and visually handicapped through skiing (down-hill, cross-country, and water), canoeing, swimming, roller skating, fishing, horseback riding, camping, square dancing, ice skating, beep baseball, and other recreational activities.

Lions Camp, located in central Wisconsin, is a project of the Wisconsin Lions Foundation. Accredited by the American Camping Association, it provides camping experience at no cost to visually handicapped children and adults from Wisconsin. Lions Camp offers quality camping and outdoor recreational activity. Programs are individualized; there are separate sessions for children, youths, and adults. The Lions Camp also has programs to accommodate multiply handicapped blind children. Family camp sessions are also available in the spring and fall. Camp facilities available for rental by special population groups. Contact the camp for year round program information.
